San Clemente State Beach

San Clemente State BeachSan Clemente State Beach is the place the locals don't want you to know about. This pristine California beach is located about a mile south of the pier.

Thanks to the state of California there is a large metered parking lot at the end of Avenida Calafia. After parking just cross the railroad track and your on the beach.

For hiking there are quite a few trails to explore some of which run up small canyons in the bluff.

You can follow the beach to Trestles to the south or the San Clemente Pier to the north. Campsites are up on the bluff  a short walk down a paved trail takes you to the beach. Most of the campsites do not have a beach view.

San Clemente State Beach Train Tracks Amtrak trains travel pass by the beach several times a day so do not linger on the tracks. I have seen parents letting there kids play on the tracks which seems kinda odd with the huge sandbox just a few feet away.

Best advice is to stay off the tracks and enjoy the beach. Amtrak trains traveling at 50 miles and hour takes almost a mile to stop! Day use is just as popular as camping.

San Clemente Beach can be packed with sunbathers during the summer months and almost empty the rest of the year.

These pictures were take in January so as you can see the weather can be nice any time of year. Early morning the weather can be overcast but it usually burns off by noon.

San Clemente State Beach CampingSan Clemente State Beach has an excellent campground which sits up on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There are 160 campsites, each site has a fire ring, picnic table and shade ramada, with water nearby.

The RV area in the family campground accommodates 72 recreational vehicles, and has water, electrical and sewage hookups. Reservations (which are recommended) can be made up to seven months in advance through Reserve America.

San Clemente State Beach is located on the south end of the city of San Clemente in Orange County. Take Interstate 5 and exit at Avenida Calafia. Head straight onto Avenida Calafia and follow down to San Clemente State Beach.
