The Kiss Statue USS Midway San Diego

Unconditional Surrender
The 25 ft tall Kiss statue is of the famous photograph taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt during the VJ Day celebrations in Times Square in 1945.

Located next to the USS Midway Museum in downtown San Diego the statue is quite popular with couples striking the same pose and having their picture taken next to the huge figures

The official name of the 6,000-pound sculpture is “Unconditional Surrender” however most people just call it the kiss statue. The work of art was dedicated on February 11, 2007 and has been turning heads ever since.

On valentines day 2013 a new permanent bronze kiss statue replaced the original foam core version.

Edith Shain  the woman who is being kissed in the statue attended the unveiling of the original statue , she died in 2010 at age 91.

Cool! I've never heard of this statue before. Next time I'm in San Diego, I will check it out.

Great website and very informative. I used to live in SoCal and there's info on here that I didn't know before.

My girlfriend and i saw this on our trip to san diego for the red bull air races. we stopped by and saw the USS Midway which is really cool to see even if you aren't into military or historical things. We took lots of photos. I also recommend that you relax and enjoy some amazing ribs at Kansas CIty BBQ, a restaurant that was used in the filming of Top Gun (the bar)

Statue is still there and made out of bronze now so it will hold up to the weather unlike the original plastic and foam one.

You can always see couples recreating the pose and having a picture taken next to the statue.
